The Boston Celtics of 2014 – 2015
The Celtics are far removed from their glory days. To start off the 2014 – 2015 season Boston has compiled just a 7 – 13 record. That puts them 8 games back of Eastern Conference leading Toronto, and if the playoffs started today that would leave the Celtics out in the cold. While the team is the 3rd best in the league in dishing the basketball with 25.7 assists per game, 9th in rebounds at 44.1 per contest and the 6th best scoring team, hitting at a 104.7 per game clip, they are one of the worst defensive units in the NBA.
When you give up 2.1 more points on average than you score each contest, 106.8 points allowed each game, that is a recipe for more losses than wins.
Point guard Rajon Rondo averages 10.8 assists per game and is one of the better passers in the NBA. He is also pulling down 7.6 rebounds per game, impressive for a 6’1″ guard. He adds 8.5 points per game and is one of the bright spots for Boston this year. 6’9″
Shooting forward Jeff Green is scoring nearly 20 points per game and adding 4.5 rebounds. But unless the Celtics can start tabulating more wins than losses, do not expect a playoff appearance in 2015. The Larry Legend Dynasty
Boston could manage only a miserable 32 – 50 record in the 1977 – 78 season. And to top that, NBA Hall of Famer and all-time Celtic scoring leader John Havlicek retired at the end of the year. Because of previous trades the Celtics owned 2 of the first 8 picks in the 1978 NBA draft.
General manager Red Auerbach took what was considered a risky pick in the first round, choosing Junior forward/guard Larry Bird of Indiana with the 6th overall pick. It was risky because Bird could have decided to stay in college for his senior year. The Celtics signed Bird, and the rest, as they say, is history.
Bird did not debut for the Celtics until the 1979 – 80 season. The 1978 – 79 team managed just 29 wins. In Bird’s initial season he was selected as the NBA’s Rookie of the Year, and helped the Celtics improve by 32 games, the biggest single season turnaround in the NBA at that time.
Bird and Boston achieved a 61 – 21 record and made it to the Eastern Conference Finals, where they lost to the Philadelphia 76ers. Center Robert Parrish and forward Kevin McHale were added before the start of the 1980 – 81 season. Bird, Parrish and McHale, known as The Big 3, went on to win 3 NBA championships with Boston, in 1981, 1984 and 1986.
When Bird retired in 1992 due to back injuries, there was no doubt he would be elected to the Hall of Fame. His accolades included those 3 NBA Championships, 2 NBA’s Finals MVP awards, 3 NBA regular season MVP awards and 12 NBA All-Star appearances.
His number 33 jersey was retired by the Celtics, and Bird was named to the NBA’s 50th Anniversary All-Time team. Bird was known as an excellent passer and exceptional shooter, and finished his career with a 24.3 point per game average, adding 6.3 assists, 1.7 steals, 10.0 rebounds and nearly 1 block per game.
