Betting On The Minutemen Basketball Games In 2024
Named after American Revolution militiamen volunteers, the Minutemen of Massachusetts play their home basketball in the Mullins Center. That stadium has a seating capacity of 9,493. A member of the Atlantic 10 Conference of the NCAA Division I, they most recently made it to the postseason NCAA basketball tournament after the 2013 – 2014 season.
That was the first time that Massachusetts made it to The Big Dance since 1998. Derek Kellogg coaches the team, which is located in Amherst, Massachusetts.
The Rhode Island Rams have to be considered the biggest consistent rival of the Minutemen, as the teams have played more than 130 times, a minimum of once a year since 1950. Rival Boston College plays UMass in the Commonwealth Classic, with the winner taking home the Commonwealth Cup. This is popular rivalry found at most online sportsbooks that accept MA players.
With a rich history and a decent season last year, the University of Mass is a key element in MA basketball betting. This guide also includes a page for betting on Boston College basketball, as well as coverage of their beloved NBA team with a page dedicated to betting on the Boston Celtics.

The 2014 – 2015 Massachusetts Minutemen Men’s Basketball Team
The Massachusetts Minutemen find themselves 2.5 games back of surprising Atlantic 10 division leading Davidson 9 games into the season. The Massachusetts men’s basketball team has a respectable record at 6 – 4, including an impressive 71 – 62 victory over conference opponent Boston College earlier in the year.
But 3 losses in a row to Harvard, LSU and Florida Gulf Coast, 3 teams they should have beaten, have uncovered some weakness. Scoring offense is excellent at 74.8 points per game, but rebounds and assists are just average compared to the other Division I teams.
On defense is where Massachusetts is excelling so far, ranking 93rd or better in rebounds, blocks and steals per game, not bad when you consider there are 351 Division I teams. Cady Lalanne has been Mister Everything for UMass so far, shooting better than 50% from the field and knocking down 14.5 points per game while grabbing 9.7 rebounds.
Maxie Esho contributes 13.7 points and 6.5 rebounds. It is too early to tell if the recent stumble was a revelation of the team’s real character, or simply a speed bump. With 21 games left to play, there is still some time for the Minutemen to poise themselves for a run at the Atlantic 10 title and March Madness in 2015.
U Mass Postseason Accomplishments
The University of Massachusetts has fielded a basketball team since 1900. As far as the NCAA Tournament is concerned, the Minutemen have showed up 9 times since 1962. A combined win loss record of 11 – 9 is admirable, but the NCAA took away 2 wins from the 1996 postseason tournament because of alleged violations.
That was the year that UMass enjoyed its best season to date, making it all the way to the Final Four before losing to #1 ranked Kentucky. The Minutemen made March Madness in 1997, 1998 and 2014, never getting further than the second round.
The National Invitation Tournament (NIT) has invited the Minutemen 13 times. The combined University of Massachusetts record in the NIT is just 13 – 14. In 1991 the University of Massachusetts men’s basketball team finished 4th in that tournament, and made it to the semifinals in 2012 before losing to Stanford. In 2008 the NIT saw Ohio State play the University of Massachusetts in the championship game. The Minutemen were in the contest all the way, before a late push by Ohio State gave UMass a second-place finish.
The Doctor Operates in Massachusetts
Julius “Doctor J” Irving is easily the best player to play at the University of Massachusetts. He was known for his artistic and almost ballet-like above the rim exploits, averaging 26.3 points and 20.2 rebounds per game during his 2 seasons at UMass. He left school early for the professional ranks, winning 3 championships and 4 Most Valuable Player awards in the ABA with the Virginia Squires and New York Nets.
He also won an NBA Championship with the Philadelphia 76ers, was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1993 and was named to the NBA’s 50th Anniversary All-Time Team. Sports Illustrated deservedly named The Doctor as one of the 40 most important athletes of all time. One of the greatest dunkers ever, Doctor J’s signature throw down included dunking after jumping from the free-throw line in slam dunk contests.
