2014 – 2015 Boston College Eagles Men’s Basketball Team
The Eagles have started the 2014 season with a 6 – 3 record. While it is nice to have more wins than losses, that still places them 3 games back of ACC leading Notre Dame. Their record is good enough for 3rd in the Atlantic Coast Conference, but when you rank 194th in the nation in rebounds per game, 203rd in scoring and 205th in assists per game out of 351 teams, you are not going anywhere in the postseason unless something changes.
The Eagles do play decent defense, averaging 7.7 steals per game. And they only give up 62.8 points per contest. But you have to put the ball in the basket to win games. With 6 of their 14 competitors in the talent-packed ACC ranked in the Top 25, Olivier Hanlan and Aaron Brown are going to have to get some help scoring the basketball if Boston College has a chance at a March Madness run in 2015.
1978 – 79 Boston College Eagles Basketball Point Shaving Scandal
5 men were convicted in the Boston College Eagles basketball game fixing scandal of 1978 – 1979. The premise was very simple. A couple of low level gamblers decided to approach a key member of that year’s BC men’s basketball team, with a proposition. The Eagles’ Rick Kuhn was set to be an important part of the team that year.
Coincidentally, Kuhn just happened to be a high school friend of Rocco Perla, one of the 2 brothers that hatched a point shaving scheme but needed someone on the team to make it happen.
The 2 Perla brothers, along with Kuhn, would look over the season schedule and the point spreads and choose specific games where Boston College was favored by a lot of points. Kuhn’s job was to make sure that the Eagles did not cover the spread. For instance, if bookmakers had BC favored by 12 points in a particular contest, Kuhn’s job on the court was to make sure that the Eagles won the game, but by fewer than 12 points.
The Perlas would bet on the underdog plus the points before the contest.
Their first outing, things did not go so well. Boston College was favored to win by 6 or 7 points against Providence on December 6, 1978. So Kuhn was instructed to make sure that they won by 5 or fewer points. Boston College jumped out to a big lead early, eventually winning the game by 19 points despite Kuhn’s point shaving efforts. Ernie Cobb was the leading scorer on the team, and with alleged mobsters getting in on the action by this time, he was recruited to guarantee that things went smoothly.
The point shaving players were given some incentive when they were told that “you can’t play basketball with broken hands.” December 16 BC played Harvard, favored by 12 points. Everything went well for the game fixing conglomerate, as the Eagles won by just 3 points.
This continued with mixed results over 9 different games. It was not until 1980, when one of the Lucchese crime family associates involved in the scheme was arrested for an unconnected offense, that the scandal came to light.
Kuhn served 28 months in prison and Ernie Cobb was never charged with any wrongdoing, even though there was proof he was given $1,000 as a payment by Kuhn at one time. A dark day in Boston College sports history to say the least.
